LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR
STUDENT-ATHLETES

Every year, thousands of student-athletes take the field across dozens of sports as part
of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Some, like Cecil College’s
DeeDee Williams and Kendra Watters, are skilled enough to juggle two sports during
their collegiate career.
Williams joined the Seahawks in the fall of 2025 from Worthing High School in
Houston, Texas. She competed in all 22 of the Seahawks’ volleyball matches this
season, including 19 starts, and primarily served as a middle hitter. Williams finished
the year leading the team in blocks (41) and collected over 100 kills.
“I realized I was good at multiple sports when I was in high school,” said Williams. “I
have always been a good athlete, but never really found my sport. I played mostly
basketball growing up, but my high school volleyball coach made me fall in love with
the sport. I enjoy learning new things, and both sports feel natural to me.”
Much like Williams, Watters stepped in right away and made an impact. The Rising
Sun High School graduate did it all during her freshman volleyball campaign, ending
the year second on the team in digs (265) and kills (204). She also finished top five on
the team in aces, blocks, and assists.
“I grew up playing multiple sports, and I have always been athletic,” said Watters. “It
was an easy decision to choose to come to Cecil knowing that I was given the ability
to play both basketball and volleyball.”
The two additions helped the Seahawks reach the semifinal round of the Region
20 Division 2 volleyball tournament, where Cecil fell one point shy of reaching the
final. Both Williams and Watters would take the floor three days later for the women’s
basketball season opening win against Delaware Technical Community College. Two
weeks later, the duo helped the Seahawks earn their first Region 20 win of the year
against Anne Arundel Community College.
Cecil College student-athletes have
many opportunities to increase their
leadership skills, including serving as
mentors during Cecil College Athletics
Summer Camps. Mentoring young
campers sharpens the communication
and interpersonal skills of our studentathletes while increasing their
confidence. Camps also give young
athletes a chance to see the Seahawks
run their athletic camps during the
summer months, beginning in mid-June
with the Cecil College Baseball Skills
Camp (Ages 7-18), which focuses on
technique in all facets of the game.
Cecil College’s Volleyball Camp offers a
Beginner Session (Ages 10-17) in June
that focuses on basic volleyball skills such
as footwork, passing, hitting and setting.
This is followed by an Advanced Session
in July centered around preparing high
school athletes for varsity competition.
The Cecil College Basketball Skills Camp
(Ages 10-15) and Specialized Shooting
Camp (Ages 11-17) offer young athletes
a chance to work on fundamentals, play
five-on-five games, and compete in
shooting competitions.
Camp sessions centered around softball
and soccer are planned for the future.
