Intro to Genealogy – Getting Started
This course is designed for beginners who want
to do family history research more effectively
and efficiently. It identifies family history
research techniques, provides participants with
the ability to locate and interpret basic types of
historical records, and reviews procedures for
accurate paper-based recording of information.

HISTORY & HUMANITIES
Life in the Past Lane: Country Roads
With the arrival of modern, high-speed
highways, many of Cecil County’s scenic routes
and the small hamlets and villages clustered
around those old corridors are overlooked. This
course explores the character, ambiance, and
history of some of the lesser-traveled roads.
Topics include waterfront towns, agricultural
communities, plus country hamlets and
villages. Note: To enhance course material
presented in the classroom a field trip may be

A Tale of the C & D Canal
The C&D Canal was a visionary undertaking and
one of the nation’s most ambitious industrial
projects of the time. “Travel” along its 14 miles
through fascinating stories. Participants will
begin their study of the Canal in the classroom,
then visit places along the ancient path for
a closer examination of the Canal and its
implications. Note: To enhance course material
presented in the classroom a field trip may be

Tales the Stones Whisper
Lots of history can be gained by studying
the past in old burial grounds. The legacy
of the region will be explored between the
18th and 20th centuries. Hear the factual
stories the tombstones whisper and learn
about Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers.

Tales from the Rails
The local depot was the center of the
community, a place to catch a train and learn
the news of the day. As tracks spread through
the region, growth followed the lines. Trace
the social history of trains on the Peninsula
from the beginning of the railroad age to the

America’s Founding Fathers and Mothers
Get a jump on the 250th anniversary in 2026
of the American Revolution. This course will
examine a presidential couple in each class:
George and Martha Washington, John and
Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson and the
women who influenced his life, and James
and Dolly Madison. Students will examine the
founders’ politics, their roles in the founding
of the United States (legislative and in
combat where applicable), their views on the
Constitution, and freedom. Instructor: Mease

Since it opened in July 2023, the movie
Barbie has grossed about one and one half
billion dollars. This is the highest grossing
movie ever for Warner Brothers Studios.
Likewise, since its opening, also in July 2023,
the movie Oppenheimer has grossed about
950 million. Oppenheimer is the second
highest grossing R-rated film ever. Beyond the
monetary statistics, what’s driving this movie
phenomenon known as “Barbieheimer?” Who,
or more precisely, what is Barbie and who was
Oppenheimer? Note: No senior tuition waiver.

Castles of Germany
This course will examine the significance of
select castles in Germany. There are around
20,000 castles throughout Germany. Most
German castles are at least a hundred years
old and now play host to museums, hotels,
cultural art centers, and historical monuments.
Students will learn fascinating facts pertaining
to each castle from construction to modern
day. Special emphasis will be placed on the
Neuschwanstein Castle, the Heidelberg Castle,
the Hohenschwangau Castle, and the Burg Eltz.
Topics include architecture, culture, folklore,
history, languages, politics, and traditions.
